  • Report # 923

Hey everyone, I hope that you've all had a wonderful week and are ready for a great weekend. As I sit here typing this it is absolutely pouring outside. That means by the time this storm is over there will be more lakes and rivers outside on all of the streets once again ! It's nice when it rains here though as that means its cooler and I like the cooler air so much. On Tuesday night I went with Dora to the taqueria we went to last week as it's always a special two for one night.

Once again I just had queso fundido and a taco al pastor. I always get super stuffed after eating Mexican food, especially the heavier stuff such as that. On Wednesday I applied for a bunch of more jobs. In total I applied for over 30 jobs online. I got one response for a job back and the guy asked me to leave him my contact information which I did, but he never got back to me. Dora came over at lunch time and we drove to an English school and we talked to the secretary there and I secured an appointment with the school director though.

In the afternoon I went for a walk and took some pictures and stopped and ate at a Chinese food place though I ate way too much. I didn't do much of anything for most of the day on Thursday, though I headed out at 3:15 pm for my appointment with the school director at 4:00 pm. I got to the school about half an hour early so I just waited outside and played around with the cellphone for a while. I headed in at 4:00 and the secretary told me to take a seat and that the director was on his way. I waited for almost 40 minutes, but he finally came and I headed into my office to talk with him.

We talked about where I was from and what I was doing here and what kind of work I've done in my life. We talked a little in Spanish and a little in English. Eventually he told me something like "here is what I can do for you." And he told me about a conversation class that will happen on Saturday and he explained to me how it goes. So basically I have an opportunity on Saturday to go there at 10:00 am and see how I do. We didn't talk at all about pay or visas or anything, but it's an opportunity for me and I just have to start somewhere.

Now I've never done anything like teaching before, but seeing as it looks like that is what I'll be doing I'll obviously be doing my very best. I am excited to have this opportunity and to see how things go tomorrow. The director asked my shirt size and said something like "you won't let me down ?" So I know I have a real chance here. I headed back home for a while and Dora called me telling me to meet her and a friend at a restaurant to discuss another opportunity.

I headed to the hotel where the restaurant was at around 7:15 as Dora told me to be there in 15 minutes, however she didn't arrive for at least another 45 minutes. Talk about a lot of waiting around for one day ! Dora and her friend arrived and we headed into the restaurant, which was an Argentinian restaurant. Basically Dora's friend had started working with Dora, but is so busy she can't continue teaching English classes in the university. So she was asking me if I would want to take over from her and do the classes which are two nights a week.

She showed me the books she uses and explained to me how the classes went and told me to send my resume and documents to her by email so she can so them and talk to her director soon. I might be meeting with them on Monday. She was a very interesting person as she lived in China for a few years and speaks Chinese. Later in the evening two more people came and they wanted to set up a group of students to work with me in the evening a few days a week.

So all of a sudden I have a possibility of three options, and hopefully they work out and I can do a great job and get the visa. These types of jobs will be completely different for me, but I will do my very best as they are the options that I have and I need to take full advantage of them. Obviously I'm a little nervous about these things and I have no idea how they will work out or even if I'll do well even and have a chance at doing all of them, but I will be optimistic and do my very best.

I am very thankful to Dora for helping me out and encouraging me to talk to the school director and having these ideas for jobs. Without that help I probably wouldn't be anywhere yet ! So I've been in this city basically three weeks, and one month in Mexico in total and it looks like some things are starting to come together. Lately I've talked with some people who have dated and are dating people from different countries and cultures. I know of a girl from Mexico with a boyfriend from Morocco, a girl from Ecuador who had a boyfriend from Jordan, another girl from Mexico who like a guy from another country in the middle east as well.

Living in Vancouver I saw interracial relationships all of the time. White guy with asian girlfriend, white girl with Indian boyfriend, and many different pairs. I think this sort of thing is awesome. Personally I've dated an african/cuban american, and been interested in asian girls, and some girls from the middle east, and of course the last couple of years I've been with Mexican girls. And I've talked with many other latinas from other countries that are such wonderful people as well. I think that interracial relationships and dating people from other countries is such a wonderful thing and that the world would be such a boring and dull place if we all just married someone exactly like us.

There should not be any more challenges to these types of relationships, especially living in open minded countries well into the 21st century. The more types of challenges I would see is the religious types of challenges that would come with dating a person who is from one faith and whose family and religion really expects that person to be with someone from the same faith. Honestly I think people should just respect their children's decisions and just support them and be happy with them as long as they are with a good person.

And if two people really love one another and the religion is really an issue someone could always say they will follow that religion as well, but I don't think there should be too much pressure for that type of thing. Whoever I know there are always very strict people out there who have such strong beliefs and who would never support these kind of relationships. It's very unfortunate but I think in the end many people will end up with the person they truly love, whether it's "prohibited" or not.

Sadly some people will end up with someone they don't even care about, and will end up in very unhappy marriages, and that should really send messages to the world that these sort of marriages should not be forced upon anyone. People should date and be with the people they want, no matter where they are from or what their background is. I wish I could just say case close and end of story, but obviously this issue will continue to cause controversy for many years to come. I've made my case though, so here is the next question:

What are your thoughts on interracial relationships and/or being with someone from another faith ? Have you personally dated someone from a different racial make up or religion than you before ? Could you see this happening in the future ? Or are you just attracted to people of your own race and background ?

Wow I pushed like a bunch of questions all into one ! I just had so much to ask on this topic I couldn't help myself. Well that's all I have today. I will leave you all with my final set of pictures from Calgary. Take care and I'll talk to you all on Monday, bye for now.

  • congrats with the job offers. i wish you the best of luck!

You're lucky to have Dora in your life. She is an amazing help and companion

I feel as you do with a different race/religion. I've actually never dated a person of my own race.

  • Lots of waiting-- ha welcome to my world. If I'm not a half hour early, I feel like I'm late. Wow, three opportunities, that's awesome! Good luck!

I have never dated outside of my race. It's cool that people do. I'm all for whatever makes someone happy (within reason, of course!). I have no problem with other people's religious beliefs. I don't believe in God, but I could be with a man who never missed a Sunday sermon without hesitation.

  • Well now you have presented a very interesting topic, but first of all-congratulations on the job opportunities!!!! I'm very happy for you and that some doors are beginning to open up for you! I think you will make a great teacher. You are very good at explaining things here in your posts, and I'll be you'll be equally good at it in person!

Ok- as far as dating or marrying outside of my race-no problem there. I don't see a problem with it at all. The color of someone's skin makes no difference to me at all.

The religion thing presents more of a problem, and actually it is something I'm currently trying to figure out how to deal with myself. I was engaged to someone for 2 years, and broke it off about a year ago, for various reasons. Recently, the man has decided that he'd like to talk to me, and he wants to get back together, etc. There are other issues that have to be worked through, but a big thing for me is that even though he says he believes in the same things that I do, he has a different way of displaying that. I want to go to church, and be involved in programs through my church, etc. I currently do that and I don't want to stop doing it. BUT, he does not want to go to church. He feels that it isn't important and he thinks that I should not ask him to do that. It is really hard for me to decide what to do. I understand what he believes, but I also know that I really want to be able to participate in those projects and things in church WITH my future husband...and if there were to be a child, I'd want us to take that baby to church together as a couple, and not be the single mom dragging her kids to church while the dad stays at home working in the garage. It is actually causing a lot of stress in my mind and it will be interesting to see what other responses you get here to this post. In my particular situation it isn't even a different religion, it is just wanting to attend a church vs. not, and so I can't even imagine how hard it would be to try and work this out if he were a different religion altogether! Very interesting topic.

  • yes, i too think inter-racial relationships are awesome. the people who are in this kind of relationship tend to be the kind of people who are more open minded and have better tolerance in having patience and accepting different opinions outside their comprehension. the marriage between different religions, however, one that is still very rare. not impossible, but harder to see happened. i think this world we live in would be a much friendlier and peaceful place if that was to be a common thing.

  • Kyle you need to put captions on your pictures to let us know what and where they are. A black squirrel? I don't think I had seen one before.

I am happy you have some opportunities for jobs coming up. All the best.

I think inter-racial relationships are cool. My children are married to American people.

  • That's great news about the job opportunities!

I have no issues with interracial relationships. I actually have always preferred Asian men. I really only dated white guys though. I think that's because where I lived in Pennsylvania was 99% white and my university also was pretty darn white.

The religion thing though... the basis of my morals and beliefs about life and how I want to live it and raise my child are tied to my religious beliefs. In a partner, I need someone with that similar foundation who would be on the same page as me. I dated an atheist, we were actually engaged, and he was condescending, constantly picked at my beliefs and felt he much smarter than me.(He literally told me my IQ test score was fraudulent because it was 20+ points higher than his.) He thought he was being charitable by not demanding I give up my faith. It was horrible for my self esteem. After I got the guts to leave him, I really started looking for a more spiritually compatible partner. I married a guy I met at the church that we're still at and we have the sweetest friendship and most nurturing relationship. There aren't battles over how to raise Juju- it's bliss, really. I highly recommend dating those who are of similar thought, spiritually.
