Report # 903
Hey everyone, I hope that you all had an awesome weekend. After work on Friday I went to my Spanish class with Carlos and finished reading my story. I now just have to type 53 more pages onto a word document and maybe I'll make the ending part a little more detailed. Carlos told me none of his students had ever done anything like that before. I really think it's a great idea for anyone working with another language..... write a story ! I'm definitely all storied out for a while though and I can't see myself writing anything for at least a few months.
Over my final two classes with Carlos we just have to work on my reference letters and that is pretty much it. After class I took the two buses home and that was all for Friday..... I definitely won't miss my 14 hour Fridays. On Saturday I went for a run in the morning to Tim Hortons and came home and had breakfast before vacuuming the house. I really didn't do anything all day, though I did go for a walk in the evening. I really should have went in the pool as it was a super nice day.
Yesterday I ran to Tim Hortons once again and in the afternoon I walked up to my grandmother's house to see if the suitcase she had would be good for me to take to Mexico. It would have been perfect but it was just too small. My grandmother will see if they have any at this store she volunteers at sometimes, and if not I'll have to buy one in Calgary. I went for another walk in the evening, watched an episode of the telenovela and talked to Dora for a while, so it was a pretty uneventful weekend.
On Saturday I talked to the guy from Indiana who I met when I was walking in Monterrey at the end of March. He said that Dora and I should come and visit, so that would be fun. He's married to a Mexican woman and he wants to live in Mexico and his wife wants to live in the US. He has a job as a teacher, so maybe I'll have to find something like that. I will be open to almost anything in the beginning as I know I can't be too picky. At work my manager has received a bunch of resumes so hopefully some people will come in for interviews in the next few days and someone can get hired.
Depending on who is hired, the person might have to give two weeks notice at their current job, so in that case I won't even see the person who replaces me. I've been training a girl in another department so she'll know how to do the main part of the job, though it is the person who will be replacing me that will need to know how to do everything. Hopefully I'll get a few days to work with the new hire, but if not I'm sure everything can be figured out. I'll be gone so I won't have to worry about anything !
I'm sure by now everyone has heard of the shooting at a premiere of the newest Batman movie in a cinema in Colorado. This is just such a tragic and senseless shooting and it's just incredibly sad thinking about the 12 people who died and the over almost 60 people who were injured. Not only were the 12 people who died and the ones injured effected, but the other people there who managed to get by unscathed will no doubt be having such horrendous memories for the rest of their lives. And of course all of the friends and family of the people killed have had their lives forever changed.
These shooting tragedies happen every once and a while, though this one has really surprised me as usually it seems to be in a school or a mall. Clearly the suspect had been planning this for months as the reports have said, it's just kind of surprising that someone would have been able to plan something like this for so long without anyone becoming suspicious. Now the gun lovers will disagree, but clearly it's still just way too easy to get a gun and bullets in many places. I even saw on the news the place where the suspect got some of the weapons, one of the employees was talking, and thought something to be very odd about this guy.
So not only do the rules need to tighten up on how easy it is for people to get guns, people in general need to be more observant, and if signs are pointing that something is not right with someone, they really should say something and take some action. I can only guess what this suspect's motive could have been, but he was obviously no idiot. From what I read he was very intelligent in university and graduated from a very difficult program. I think this should stop any myths that some people may have that these shooting atrocities are done only by dead beats or low lives.
Anyone can truly be evil. No matter how rich, successful, or educated they are. Obviously only the shooter himself knows what was going through his head when he committed his horrible crime, but hopefully a lot more information comes out in the court. In my opinion though after a investigation is done as much as possible this individual should be executed. People who do things so horrible just can't be given a second chance. And I can't see a lot of people being able to stomach having this man live another 60 some years in prison.
Now people might be saying that movie theatres should be checking bags before people enter, but in my opinion that won't do anything. If someone comes with high powered weapons, they are going to do what they are wanting to do regardless if there is someone there checking. Unless a couple of armed guards are deployed at every public place, I don't really think much can be done in that regard. It was an isolated event and we can't turn the world into a military police state just because of the sick actions of a few horrible individuals.
That being said though I was shocked to read that one of the victims in the movie theatre in Colorado had narrowly missed a possible death a month early in a shooting in Toronto. I just can't believe the unfortunate circumstances a person could run into like that...... very, very, very unlikely. So really all I can say is we should all have our thoughts with the families who lost their loved ones, it needs to be made a whole lot tougher for people to get guns, (though personally I don't see why anyone needs to own one), and and we all need to be a little more aware of what is going on with people and if there are any possible signs beforehand where the police could be notified.
We can't live our lives in fear and overreact and change everything about the world we live in because of these actions, but from every tragedy things should be learned and some changes can be made. It's impossible to all of the horrific events like this from occurring, but certain actions can be taken to make sure they are less likely. So I hope a discussion gets started ASAP and some good suggestions can take place as to what can be done differently, and I really hope the shooter is punished to the full extent.
For the next question:
Do you think anything could have been done to avoid this tragedy ? What would you change to improve the safety of people in the future and lessening the chances of these shooting tragedies occurring ?
That's all I have today. I'll leave you all with some pictures from around the front yard that I took a few weeks ago. I wish everyone all of the best. Take care and I'll talk to you all on Thursday, bye for now.

That shooting was so shocking to hear. A movie theatre now.. We can't expect to be safe anywhere. I wonder what his motive was. He's an intelligent person, straight A's, and all I was told.. Either life in prison or execution, he must have known that he'd end up there.
I don't think getting checked out before entering a theatre will do anything. You're right.. If someone wants to do something, they'dfind a way to get through that check. If even start checking, I think that would give some sick people a desire to repeat the incident that caused it.
Good luck with your story and hope your work hires someone in time for you to show the person around a bit.
I thought of you this morning as I bought my Tea from Tim Horton's! LOL Love this place. I also like Starbucks but its WAY too pricey! haha.
But you are one of the few Canadians I know on here. Love that you talk about Timmy's!
Are you excited about Mexico? Thats one place I won't go to. Never really had the desire to go. I want to go to Hawaii, Europe...and would love to travel the States more. But not Mexico!
The shooting was horrible. Simply horrible.
What floors me the most is that it was at a movie theatre. That he had no true motive {that we know of. If he did. He hasn't shared it yet}
Its just odd & scary.
Now everyone will be paranoid WHEREVER they go! *sighs*
People are now saying that the Government or something was behind this. That they like "hired" this guy or something like that. Which seems dumb & I hope its NOT true. They took innocent lives. I think they are trying to grab onto straws or something simple because they can't explain WHY this guy would do this, why he would let them catch him or WHY he told the cops about his apartment being a giant mine field of bombs.... But it could be something as simple as the guy snapped & stopped caring... maybe he had planned to blow himself up or something but got to cocky & the cops caught him at his car? Or he simply doesn't care. Did what he had to do...Who knows. We may never know. He had his reasons, sick as they were....
*sighs* those poor victims. Families and friends! My heart goes out to them!
No I believe that if a person has a will to kill they will find a way no matter what sercurity we have to protect others!
it's one thing to write a story. it's another to write one in a foreign language. it's double the pressure and difficulty. I would know.
so you're going to mexico? that's awesome. never been there, but can only imagine the many awesome food you'll encounter during the trip. i miss tamales. we don't have them here in indonesia. i used to have them back when i lived in california.
anyways, i too heard about the shooting. it's all over the news, internationally. so now usa is known for a country of guns. sigh, oh well, that too shall pass. i hope they'll bring justice to the the person who did it. such meaningless death to those who became the victims.
great front yard, by the way. good enough to turn it into a mini-golf place
Beautiful landscaping. I like the little zen garden part.
The Colorado shooting is awful. It's just proof that evil is alive and well. There will always be disturbed and conscienceless people so I don't think there's much to be done.
