  • Report # 917

Hey everyone, I hope that you’ve all had an awesome weekend. I’ve now spent three days here in Lázaro Cárdenas and it has been a little difficult for me. Aside from half a day on Saturday Dora has just not been able to really spend any time with me. There are a whole bunch of complicated reasons but she keeps changing her story. First she said give her the weekend and now she has give her a week. I can’t wait forever though and if things aren’t better after this week I will be extremely frustrated and disappointed.

She has done a lot for me when she has been here, and I do appreciate that, and she is helping me with finding a job, and I am very thankful, but it’s just been so frustrating basically being all alone in a place that I basically don’t know anyone. The climate here is not helping at all. The days are basically around 32 C (90 F) and the nights are still around 25 C. (77 F) There is extreme humidity every single day and it’s just impossible to stay cool unless I’m lying in bed in the room with a/c.

I enter the house in the afternoon or evening and it’s like entering an oven. The air is hot, the table is hot, the floor is hot, the bed is hot. This place is an apartment type house on a second level, but I am really hoping I can find a place much smaller and cooler. It’s frustrating because I’m always hot and sticky even just sitting here typing on the computer in the kitchen in the morning is tough for me. I did go for a walk yesterday for a couple of hours but when I came back I was just exhausted.

I’m just not a tropical person and I need cold at night, or at the very least a place that is cooler where I can at least walk around without feeling that I’m sitting in an oven. With Dora’s situation and the climate here I’ve just been so hot and frustrated. So I just really, really hope things will be better in a week. I’d love to be able to find a place smaller and cooler, but it’s must more important that I can find a job first. So I suppose I just have to man up and handle this for now and hope things get better.

I have seen two movies since I got here. On Friday I watched The Safe, and on Saturday I saw The Expendables 2. While neither is going to win an Oscar award, they were both great action movies. Last month while I was in Calgary on the front page of the newspaper was another article about the anniversary of the death of Elvis. This type of stories are just a bit much in my opinion. The man died like 35 years ago and ok at the time it was a big deal, and maybe every number of years to mark an anniversary, but it’s a bit ridiculous to read about his death year after year after year.

I think the same thing about former US President John F. Kennedy. Unless there is something new to add to the story it really doesn’t have to be in the paper every single year. And the stories get more ridiculous every year as well with conspiracy theories and all that. I just wish newspapers can put their efforts into coming up with important articles that deal with today’s issues instead of recycling the same old stuff year after year after year.

And I think the same thing about natural disasters and other worldly events. Sure they were complete tragedies and important events in history, but they don’t need to talk about them every single year for years to come, unless something very important like a crucial development to the story comes out. And it’s normal to hear about these stories on like the first anniversary or the 10th or 50th or something like that, but every single year is a bit much ! So that is just my little thought for today.

    For the next question:

Do you think stories about the death of someone well known, or some huge event that took place in the world should be talked about year after year after year, why or why not ?

I have found a way to cut down on my pictures. From now on I’ll just show 24 pictures from every set. So I’ll leave you all with some pictures from Calgary. Take care and I’ll talk to you all on Thursday, bye for now.

  • I’m really sorry to hear that you are having a rough time right now. I am familiar with the terribly hot climate, and the humidity just makes it worse. I guess by seeing the two movies, you were able to be in some cool air for a short time at least. Make sure you drink plenty of water and stay hydrated-I made the mistake of getting dehydrated being outdoors this summer and not drinking enough, and I was sick for days afterwards.

Are you living in the same city/town as Dora now, or is there some distance between you? That will make things hard for sure. I really hope it works out, and I just encourage you to really keep your chin up-things have a way of working out just the way they are supposed to. I always look forward to your posts, and admire you for moving and taking this new adventure in your life. Hang in there!

  • Oh geez, that sounds rough. I think once you have been there awhile though things will get better. Right now you’re in a new place, pretty much alone, so it’s going to be a jarring experience. Give it time though. You may even learn to like the heat. I grew up in New York, but I don’t know if I could handle a super cold winter anymore.

As to your question, for the most part I like to be reminded of anniversaries. However, this is only true to a certain extent. For the first few years I think a long write up is warranted, and then after that maybe every fifth or tenth year. During the years in between a small blurb is enough.

I hope things get better for you soon!

  • It is hard when you are away from your home and have things go wrong. But if you are in a different country, and things are not up to par, then it becomes so much more difficult. Hope Dora is more supportive and can give you more of her time, and hope you get a job soon.

  • I am sorry to hear that you are having a hard time with the heat.  I am from the South and it is terrible here! I always try try to eat light and keep cool drinks with me. Don’t wear clothes that cling to you. Wear cotton. And try to not stay in the air condition a lot. Your body will take longer to adjust.

  • Sorry things are off to such a hot and sticky start. Your description reminds me of my part of Florida! Hope you’re able to be working soon and can get a good routine going and a new place to stay. Things are often tough in the beginning!

  • hang in there, kyle. i had a feeling you might have a problem adjusting to the climate. considering you came from canada, where it’s almost always cool/cold and dry, it’s understandable that you are not comfortable with it. on top of that, the need to adjust to a new living situation and finding a job. i’ve been there. when i came back to indonesia after years living in united states for education and work. but home is anywhere you set out your heart for. it may take a while, but eventually you’ll get used to it and come to call your new place ‘home’.
