Month: May 2013

  • Report # 997

So 2013 is now 1/3 over which may surprise some people, but really it’s just another year flying by super quickly. The last few days here have been super sunny, though kind of cool. Monday was incredibly windy and that made it feel a lot cooler than the 13 C (55 F) that it was. Starting today though it will be significantly warmer, with some days over 20 C (68 F) so it will be a great week to start off May.

I’ve continued running with Parker everyday and walking with Molly so I’ve been getting my exercise. At night I’ve just been watching a movie before bed. The other night I saw Shanghai Kiss, which was a romantic comedy type movie, and last night I saw I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, which was a horror movie that I had never heard of before. I knew there was I other movies with a similar title, but I have never seen those either. It was an ok movie, but it ended up being kind of ridiculous.

Yesterday I got a couple of calls about jobs, but one was way too far away, and the other is pretty far away as well. Sometimes on the job posting site, there is just information about the job, though it won’t say the company name or where it’s located, so I applied for some positions knowing that they might be too far away. At least I’m getting calls, so I just have to keep at it and one of these days I’ll get some better opportunities.

It’s Wednesday and the company I interviewed for on Friday didn’t call me so I’m thinking they must have hired someone else. It was not a job I could have seen myself doing for a long time, but temporarily I would have done it. Today I will continue to apply for some more jobs which should put me close to 70 jobs applied for in total since I started over a month ago. It’s definitely been very challenging !

Last year while I was in Mexico I somehow stumbled upon a blog on a site called Chicago Now which seems to be a place where bloggers from Chicago are able to have their blogs. I can’t remember exactly how I came across the certain blog that I did, but I can say I was certainly not impressed after reading it.

I had wanted to reply and leave a comment, but seeing as the lady had already posted that particular blog months earlier, I just didn’t bother. Today however, I have decided to take aim at this blog. I really meant to do so months ago, but I always seem to get side tracked ! Now I hope that everyone reads this blog as it make what I’m talking about today so much easier to understand.

This particular blog is right here:

    http://www.chicagonow.com/south-siders-guide-to-happiness/2012/07/why-moving-to-canada-is-a-horrible-idea-a-south-siders-perspective/

The author, Joy Sinegar, calls her blog “A southsiders guide to happiness” though she didn’t seem to bring anything but hate in this particular post entitled: Why Moving to Canada is a horrible idea: A South Sider’s Perspective. Basically Ms. Singegar was talking about how she had read some stuff on social media sites saying how people were so against the Obama healthcare plan that they would move to Canada. About the only thing I can agree with this lady is that anyone who chooses to leave their country over something like that is just over exaggerating and being utterly ridiculous.

Ms. Sinegar however didn’t just try to say how ridiuclous such a move would be, she just piled on sentence after sentence about what she seems how life in Canada is and why it would be such a horrible idea to come here. Near the beginning she starts out by saying:

I have been to Canada at least three times and those trips there have solidified, for me, that Canada sucks!

She then goes off on some completely stupid reasons as to why she thinks Canada “sucks.” She complains about the food having no flavour, and then saying that when Canadians are singing they sound funny, using Celine Dion and Sarah McLachlan as examples. She then complains about high taxes and says that Canadians don’t think like Americans. So all throughout the article she seems to be bashing Canada for everything no matter how stupid and miniscule it may be.

Now everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, as I’ve said before I never go to another place and talk about it in such a negative light. I wrote a blog about this not too long ago, but as I said then, not everyone will be like me, and clearly some people have no problem bashing another place and sounding almost hateful when they talk about it. So while Ms. Sinegar is entitled to her opinion, I think she comes off as extremely arrogant, ridiculous and downright idiotic.

She writes about how she had trouble at the border and was detained for a long time, which obviously would be incredibly frustrating, but that has happened to other people in other countries as well. There is nothing Canadian or American about getting detained at a border…. it depends on the customs officers and what they are thinking… it could happen to someone in Canada or the U.S… and I’m sure in many other countries as well.

Her points about the singing just sound plain dumb. There are talented singers all over, and some singers are more talented than others. Everyone has their own personal taste of music, so while not every singer will appeal to everyone else, to just claim that Canadians sound weird when they are singing based off of two singers that the lady obviously doesn’t like, is just being stupid. And from what I know, Celine Dion and Sarah McLachlan have done well in the U.S. as well and they have lots of fans there, so clearly there are many people who would think that Ms. Sinegar’s comment was just weird.

Now I will say the taxes here do appear to be high… that I can’t dispute, but when Ms. Sinegar goes on to say “Your money would do better in Mexico.” Well duh !!!!!!!! Is this woman stupid ? Of course people’s money would do better in Mexico ! In Mexico they use pesos and a lot of times, though not always, things are cheaper there.

Ms. Sinegar should probably take a trip to Bolivia and Sudan while she’s at it and “enlighten” people on how their money would go further in those countries as well. Thank-you Ms. Sinegar for providing such groundbreaking and enlightening commentary. I’d never have guessed that an American citizens money would go further in Latin America and Africa ! Seriously, I think she needs to read that line again, I don’t know if she realizes how dumb it makes her sound.

So while the taxes are higher here, they certainly aren’t as high as Ms. Sinegar was trying to claim they are. She obviously could afford to take a few more basic business math courses and figure out how to calculate tax rates a bit better, but that’s a whole other story. Canadians don’t think like us ? Well first off, everyone thinks differently. She can’t stereotype a whole country and claim that’s how Canadians in general think.

What she wrote about the waitress, I’ll admit if that really happened it was odd. Who knows though, maybe she had been working a long day and wasn’t thinking much, but just because of one waitress, to write a whole section on how Canadians think… that’s just being silly. And just like in any country there are good restaurants and bad ones…. obviously in her opinion she didn’t eat at any good ones. Some people are snobs when it comes to eating out though and they are just impossible to please no matter what !

Bottom line, I just had to respond to her blog and it’s complete lack of sense and utter stupidity. As I said at the beginning, I will say that people who talk about moving to another country just over some health care legislation are clearly going overboard, but for someone to use their entire blog just to bash another country, a lot of times on completely false and untrue grounds is just not acceptable. Personally I hope Ms. Sinegar never comes back as we’d be better off without her narrow minded, idiotic, and hateful views.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and it’s great that people take the time to post and share their opinions with other people, but I don’ think there is anything nice about posting something so stupid and hateful. In this day and age of blogs and social media, we all say things we regret at times, but to type up a whole blog devoted to such trash I just don’t get it. Clearly Ms. Sinegar is no fan of Canada, but in term I can say that if she truly thinks all of that garbage she wrote, Canadians would not be fans of Ms. Sinegar either.

    For the next question:

What did you think about the blog post ? Was it appropriate or did it cross the line ?

That’s all I have for today. Take care and I’ll talk to you all on Saturday, bye for now.
